What do fishing piers, barber shops, tea rooms, and libraries have in common?
They’re all third places: communal spots outside home and work that help us form relationships, strengthen belonging, and stay connected.
This summer, a group of young people from Carteret County set out to rediscover those vital spaces. Through recorded conversations with local shop owners, librarians, artists — and with one another — they created Coastal Connections, a podcast episode that’s funny, heartfelt, and full of insight about community, identity, and connection.
In this episode, you’ll hear how third places serve as quiet anchors in fast-changing towns, how youth voice can illuminate what’s at risk, and how neighbors and institutions can support — and revive — spaces that bind us together.
